Expedition Into Darkness Combat and Controls
Win fights with spacing, stamina, and the right weapon components.
Combat in Expedition Into Darkness is fast enough to feel brutal and slow enough that mistakes are usually your fault. You fight in third person with stamina-gated movement, assembled weapons, and enemy packs that punish panic. Because permadeath erases the character and carried loot, every bad engagement is an economy event — not just a reload.
This page covers control fundamentals, stamina discipline, weapon roles, and how to read Fleshkin, Goblins, and Bonekin. Pair it with weapon crafting, beginner builds, and how to extract so winning a fight still ends in a living courier.
Control fundamentals
Exact keybinds can be rebound, but the verbs matter:
- Move and camera — standard third-person locomotion; keep the camera slightly elevated so pack edges stay visible.
- Sprint — hold to run; costs stamina. A sprint attack exists while running — use it as a commit tool, not a default opener.
- Backstep / sidestep — stamina spends that create space. Empty stamina in a Fleshkin rush is a death sentence.
- Light and heavy strikes — timing and reach depend on the assembled weapon (sword, mace, axe, polearm, spear, bow, crossbow).
- Sheathe / draw — holster to free hands for utility such as a torch when your loadout is awkward.
- Switch weapon — toggle primary and secondary; bring a reach option and a close option when learning.
- Rotate weapon — on rotatable types, change the impact surface to match the target.
- Inventory — Tetris-style stowing; rotate items while dragging. Clumsy inventory mid-fight is how Goblins win.
- Ammo cycle — bows and crossbows need deliberate ammo choice before the pack closes.
If you cast forbidden magic, watch corruption. Fill that purple measure completely and you can explode — another way a “won” fight becomes a wipe.
Learn binds in a quiet Moor pocket before you take them into Catacomb tunnels. The getting started loop is the right place to drill.
Stamina is the real health bar
New players watch hit points. Veterans watch stamina.
Rules that keep you alive:
- Never spend your last stamina on a finishing swing if a second enemy is still active.
- Prefer one clean backstep over three panicked sprints.
- After a sprint engage, plant your feet and reclaim stamina before the next commit.
- In co-op, stagger engages so someone always has stamina to peel (co-op tips).
Stamina bankruptcy turns every enemy type into a threat. Fleshkin especially convert your empty bar into a chase you cannot deny.
Weapon roles from components
Weapons are built from parts — grips, shafts, blades, and other components — then tinted and liveried to taste. Function first:
| Family | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Swords | Flexible tempo | Needs positioning vs packs |
| Maces | Armor-crushing hits | Slower recovery |
| Axes | Brutal commits | Punishing whiffs |
| Polearms / spears | Reach and lane control | Bad if surrounded |
| Bows / crossbows | Soften packs, pick archers | Inventory and ammo pressure |
Craft at camp after extracts. Mid-ruin crafting fantasies waste time you should spend walking to an extraction point. Deep assembly notes live under builds and weapon crafting. Starter kits are listed in beginner builds.
Camp facilities gate advanced recipes along Workbench → Workshop/Ironworks → Forge → Blacksmith → Armoursmith. See camp progression and camp upgrades.
Enemy primers
Fleshkin
They come screaming and sprinting. Expect aggressive gap closes, bloodlust pressure, and variants that change the silhouette (headless, spinal, bloated, fencer-like threats, larger bulls). Do not backpedal forever into unknown rooms. Sidestep the rush, spend one punish window, then reset stamina.
Carry a plan for being clipped once — because you will be.
Goblins
Knife-happy scavengers from Blackblood clans: cowardly alone, murderous in packs. Archers, spearmen, grenadiers, shamans, sergeants, and worse escalate the chaos. Kill or suppress ranged first when you can do it without eating three melee swings. Polearms and deliberate peeks shine here. Watch the linked Goblin combat footage, then practice the same pack on The Moor before Catacomb chokes.
Bonekin
Cold bones that march without haste, without fear, and without end. They feel “slow,” which tricks players into greedy animations. In Catacomb Ruins that patience becomes a wall. Chip carefully, keep a lane open to extract, and never assume a skeleton is “almost dead enough” to ignore while you loot.
Encounter hygiene
- Pull packs with intent; accidental double pulls end runs.
- Fight near known retreat paths mapped in the map hub.
- Stop fighting when a leave trigger hits — combat skill includes walking away (how to extract, extraction checklist).
- In Chapel Ruins, quiet audio does not mean safe audio; check corners before heavy swings.
Co-op combat basics
With up to five players, assign:
- Anchor — holds melee attention with a sturdy kit.
- Reach — spears/polearms controlling lanes.
- Ranged — deletes Goblin archers and softens elites.
- Caller — names focuses and extract timing.
Use the party planner before the drop. Revive heroics that strand the party in a dead end are how full groups wipe together.
Practice plan
- Warm up controls on a light first expedition route.
- Take one Goblin pack fight with a reach weapon only.
- Take one Fleshkin rush with stamina drills (backstep → punish → reset).
- Extract on purpose even if you “could keep going.”
Track upcoming balance and feature changes on the release timeline and keep systems links in the wiki overview.
Master the bar under your character — stamina — and the ruins become readable instead of random.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What should I bind or learn first?
Sprint, backstep/sidestep, weapon switch, and inventory rotate. Those four decide whether you control spacing or die mid-menu.
Which weapon is best for beginners?
A reach option (spear or polearm) plus a simple backup melee covers most early packs. Check Beginner Builds and Weapon Crafting for component combinations.
How do I beat Goblin packs?
Avoid being surrounded, pressure archers early, and use peeks instead of standing in the swarm. Stamina resets between commits matter more than raw DPS.
Why do I keep dying with health left?
Usually stamina bankruptcy or a bad pull. Empty stamina during a Fleshkin sprint leaves no escape tools even if your health bar looks fine.
Does magic replace weapons?
Treat forbidden power as high-risk utility. Corruption can kill you if mismanaged. Learn steel fundamentals before leaning on dark bargains.
Should I fight near the extraction point?
Only if the pack blocks the leave. Optional fights at the door are a common wipe pattern — rotate or disengage when bags are already full.
