The Moor Map Guide

The Moor is the playtest region most players should learn first in Expedition Into Darkness. Open sightlines, boat-wheel exits, lever sequences, a flooded battleground, and basin pockets teach extraction discipline without the tunnel blindness of deeper ruins. Antediluvian Interactive’s medieval co-op extraction looter still kills the greedy here — but the Moor forgives a few more mistakes than Catacomb Ruins will.

Use this page with locations, extraction points, and how to extract. New characters should arrive from getting started and first expedition with a light kit.

Why the Moor is the tutorial that never ends

Even after you unlock denser maps, short Moor loops remain the cleanest way to fund Building Supplies for camp upgrades. Readable terrain lets you:

  • Spot Fleshkin chases early
  • Rehearse leave calls in co-op (parties of 1–5)
  • Practice boat-wheel and lever extracts until muscle memory sticks
  • Abort greed when Goblin packs own a doorway

Treat every Moor run as delivery practice. The package is your inventory. The destination is camp stash. Permadeath does not grade on style.

Boat-wheel exits

Playtest routes repeatedly feature boat wheels as the memorable exit language of the Moor. When you drop:

  1. Orient toward likely wheel approaches before opening chests.
  2. Note landmarks — flooded edges, basin lips, ruined posts — so you can find the wheel under stress.
  3. Tell the party which wheel is primary and which approach is backup.

If the primary wheel is contested by Goblins (grenadiers and ogres love chokes), do not “just push.” Rotate. A live courier with half a bag beats a heroic wipe at the wheel.

Watch the embedded exit footage on this page, then repeat the same leave until you can narrate the route without looking at a guide.

Levers, flooding, and path control

Levers on the Moor often change how water and paths connect. Practical habits:

  • Assign one player as lever lead in co-op (party planner, co-op tips).
  • Call pulls out loud so nobody double-pulls or leaves a needed gate shut.
  • After a lever changes the route, re-confirm the extract path before you fill the last slots.

Levers are not loot. They are navigation. Players who treat them as optional toys get trapped on the wrong side of a flood with heavy bags.

Flooded battleground

The flooded battleground is a high-drama pocket: wreckage, water, and fight lines that funnel movement. It is excellent for materials and terrible for panic decisions.

Rules for the battleground:

  • Enter only after naming the exit you will use when bags hit the trigger.
  • Fight on the edges when possible; deep water plus Fleshkin sprints punish stacked teams.
  • Do not open a second loot wing while already overloaded.
  • If a teammate downs mid-basin fight, weigh revive risk against the extract clock — see combat and controls.

The battleground teaches a lesson the whole game repeats: optional clear becomes mandatory wipe when you are already rich.

Basin routes

Basin pockets create natural amphitheaters — good for sightlines, bad for feeling safe. Use basins to:

  • Scout Goblin packs before committing
  • Stage a regroup before the final push to a boat wheel
  • Drop junk weight before the exit fight (loot and resources)

Avoid lingering for “one more chest” along the basin rim after your leave trigger. The rim is where parties argue and die.

Suggested Moor loops

Loop A — First successful extract

  1. Light beginner build.
  2. Find boat wheel → pull needed levers → mark backup approach.
  3. Take the first meaningful Building Supplies or tool find.
  4. Leave. Deposit. Celebrate only after stash.

Use the extraction checklist literally.

Loop B — Camp funding

  1. Target supplies for Workbench or Ironworks (camp progression, crafting recipes).
  2. Stay under a strict bag trigger.
  3. Skip boss-skull detours unless still under threshold (locations).
  4. Extract, craft, repeat.

Loop C — Exit exam before catacombs

  1. Run three clean Moor extracts in a row with the same leave calls.
  2. Only then queue Catacomb Ruins.
  3. Keep Moor as your “bank run” map whenever a wipe streak appears.

Common Moor failures

MistakeFix
Never locating the boat wheelScout exit first every drop
Lever chaos in co-opOne lever lead, loud calls
Battleground victory lapLeave on trigger, not on clear
Pushing a contested wheelRotate to backup approach
Skipping deposit after successStash before queueing again

The Moor is not “easy mode.” It is readable mode. Use that readability to learn the only skill that transfers to every later ruin: leaving alive with something the camp can spend. For release timing toward Q4 2026 (Steam 3126410), see the release timeline and wiki overview.

Name the wheel. Pull the levers you need. Cross the flooded ground once — on the way out.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I exit The Moor?

Scout a boat-wheel exit early, pull any levers needed to keep the path open, and leave when your bag, injury, or time trigger hits. Rotate to a backup approach if Goblins own the primary wheel.

What is the flooded battleground for?

It is a high-value, high-chaos loot pocket. Enter with an exit already named, fight from edges when possible, and do not start optional clears after you are already heavy.

Should beginners stay on The Moor?

Yes. Learn three clean extracts here before Catacomb Ruins. The Moor remains a strong Building Supplies farm even after you unlock denser maps.

Who should pull levers in co-op?

Appoint one lever lead so path changes are tracked. Call pulls out loud, then re-confirm the extract route before filling the last inventory slots.

What should I farm on The Moor for camp?

Building Supplies and early crafting components for Workbench and Ironworks. Deposit immediately and spend on facilities before chasing vanity loot.

Where can I see a Moor exit in video?
