Expedition Into Darkness Getting Started

Learn the extraction loop before the ruins teach it the hard way.

Getting Started Expedition Into Darkness

Expedition Into Darkness is a medieval third-person co-op dungeon crawler and extraction looter by Antediluvian Interactive. You assemble a character, descend into haunted ruins, fight nightmare creatures, and try to leave through an extraction point with loot still on your person. Fail, and that character is gone forever — along with everything they carried.

This getting-started guide explains the loop, what is safe, what is not, and which wiki pages to open before your first serious run. Planned Steam release sits in Q4 2026 (app 3126410); advice here reflects the announced design and playtest-facing systems.

What you are actually playing

Think of each session as a high-stakes raid, not a persistent adventure RPG character that shrugs off death. The fantasy is dark and Lovecraftian: glory, forbidden knowledge, and riches above ancient ruins — paid for with blood and sanity.

Core pillars you must internalize on day one:

  • Party size: solo, or online co-op with up to four allies (1–5 total).
  • Permadeath: dead character = lost loadout on the body.
  • Camp stash: anything stored at base is safe between runs.
  • Crafting: weapons are assembled from components, not bought as finished legendaries.
  • Camp growth: materials fund facility upgrades that unlock better recipes and workshops.

If you only remember one sentence: loot is not yours until it is in the stash after a successful extract.

Session flow for beginners

  1. Prepare at camp. Review stash space, craft or repair a simple weapon, and leave surplus materials behind. See weapon crafting and beginner builds.
  2. Choose a region. Early comfort zone is often The Moor; Catacomb Ruins and Chapel Ruins punish greed faster. Overview everything in the map hub.
  3. Enter with a goal. Example goals: “grab Building Supplies and leave,” or “scout one extraction route and extract light.” Avoid “clear the map.”
  4. Fight only what you must. Fleshkin sprint and scream, Goblins swarm in packs, Bonekin march without fear. Details live in combat and controls.
  5. Extract on purpose. Know your exit before bags are heavy. Follow how to extract, extraction points, and the extraction checklist.
  6. Deposit and upgrade. Move valuables into stash immediately, then spend toward the next camp step in camp progression and camp upgrades.

Risk rules that save runs

Carry weight is a death timer

Full bags slow decisions. When inventory pressure rises, you take worse fights and miss audio cues. Extract earlier than your greed wants. Empty space is a survival tool.

Stash discipline

Before every expedition, strip the character down to what the run needs. Keep crafting components, upgrade materials, and backup weapons in camp. A dead run should hurt — it should not erase your entire economy.

One job per run

New players fail by mixing “deep explore,” “boss hunt,” and “full loot” into a single outing. Pick one job. The first expedition guide scripts a conservative opener you can copy.

Combat expectations (quick version)

You fight in third person with stamina-gated movement and weapon swings. Sprint and backsteps cost stamina; empty stamina in a bad pocket is how Fleshkin finish you. Rotate weapons, mind reach on spears and polearms, and treat Goblin packs as area-control problems rather than free loot pinatas.

For bind-level detail, open combat and controls. For loadouts that forgive mistakes, use beginner builds.

Co-op from the first hour

You can learn solo, but the game is built for coordinated parties. Before inviting friends:

  • Agree on an extract call (who says “leave now”).
  • Split roles: scout, melee anchor, ranged overwatch.
  • Share stash goals so nobody hoards Building Supplies the camp needs.

Use the party planner and co-op tips once you have two or more regular players.

Camp as your real progression

Character death resets the body. Camp upgrades do not. Early priorities usually look like:

  • Workbench — foundational crafting (grips, shafts, basic assembly).
  • Branch into Workshop (contraptions / utility) and/or Ironworks (ingot recipes).
  • Climb Forge → Blacksmith → Armoursmith as materials and tools allow.

Do not rush every branch at once. Read camp progression so your first Building Supplies unlock recipes you will use on the next five runs.

Maps you will hear about first

RegionBeginner note
The MoorOpen approach ground; learn exits and pacing here.
Catacomb RuinsTight tunnels, Bonekin pressure, easy to overextend.
Chapel RuinsQuiet-looking sanctuaries that still kill the careless.

Pair map reading with extraction points so geography always ends in a leave plan.

Checklist before you queue

  • Weapon assembled and understood (weapon crafting)
  • Nonessential stash items left in camp
  • Party size and roles decided (party planner)
  • Exit route named (how to extract)
  • Run goal written in one sentence
  • Escape callout agreed if co-op

When that list is green, you are ready for the first expedition plan. For systems indexes and release tracking, keep the wiki overview and release timeline bookmarked.

Play slow on day one. The ruins reward patience more than heroics, and the camp you build between deaths is the only character that truly persists.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Expedition Into Darkness a Roblox game?

No. It is a PC Steam title (app 3126410) by Antediluvian Interactive — a medieval third-person co-op extraction dungeon crawler planned for Q4 2026.

Can I play solo?

Yes. You can enter alone or with up to four allies (party size 1–5). Solo runs demand stricter extract discipline because nobody can revive a bad fight.

What is safe after death?

Only the camp stash and camp upgrades. The dead character and carried loot are gone. Deposit valuables after every successful extract.

What should I unlock first at camp?

Prioritize Workbench, then the Ironworks or Workshop branch that matches your next crafting goal. See Camp Progression and Camp Upgrades for the full chain through Forge, Blacksmith, and Armoursmith.

Which guide should I read after this?

Read How to Extract next, then First Expedition. Add Combat and Controls before you push into Catacomb or Chapel routes.

Where do I track release news?

Use the release timeline on this wiki and the official Steam page. Playtest footage helps, but treat dates as planned until Antediluvian Interactive confirms launch.
