Armor Loadouts Expedition Into Darkness

Armor and containers decide how long you stay upright and how much greed you can afford in Expedition Into Darkness. This page covers layered clothing, bags and backpacks, helmet parts such as napes and visors, and the hard line between stash-safe gear and carried risk. The game is Antediluvian Interactive’s medieval third-person co-op extraction looter (Steam app 3126410, planned Q4 2026): solo or up to four allies, permadeath on the body, camp stash permanent.

Pair these loadouts with beginner builds, weapon crafting, and how to extract. Pretty plate on a corpse still counts as a loss.

Layered clothing — think slots, not a single chest piece

Playtest armor data treats the body as a stack of slots: tunics and gambesons, coats of plates, mail hauberks, chest protection, coifs, padded collars, aventails, gorgets, and more. Protection is not a single hit-point sponge. Community formulas describe defense as roughly base defense × material grade hardness percentage × durability percentage. That means material quality and repair discipline matter as much as the silhouette.

Early stack (Moor learners)

  • Soft or padded torso layers (tunic → gambeson progression) for readable weight.
  • Simple coif or light head cover before you invest in full modular helmets.
  • Neck padding if you have it — throats are not fashion accessories.
  • Mobility first: if the stack turns every backstep into molasses, strip a layer.

Mid stack (after Ironworks / Forge metals)

  • Mail sleeves when arm defense starts mattering in denser packs.
  • Chest plates or coats of plates as extracts fund materials.
  • Heavier neck pieces (aventail, later gorget) when you stop dying to basic mistakes.

Late stack (Blacksmith / Armoursmith goals)

  • Steel-facing recipes and Armoursmith outputs once camp progression actually reaches that spine.
  • Still leave parade configurations in stash during supply runs.

Durability falloff is quiet. A cracked hauberk with great base numbers underperforms a repaired mid kit. Inspect before queue.

Helmets — napes, visors, and modular heads

Headwear is not only hats. Some helmets expose component slots. Community catalogues show pieces such as tailed sallet napes with elongated rear protection, plus sallet visors (plain or decorated) that attach into dedicated slots. Other parts — ear guards, plumes, crests — change coverage and identity.

Practical rules:

  • Nape coverage matters when you retreat and something swings from behind in tight ruins.
  • Visors trade perception and comfort for facial protection — test visibility in a safe Moor session before Catacomb night ops.
  • Material grade on helmet parts follows the same hardness and durability multipliers as body armor.
  • Do not debut five untested helmet attachments on the run that carries your only Building Supplies.

If you are still learning combat and controls, a simple coif plus caution beats a half-configured sallet you cannot see through.

Bags and backpacks — capacity is a death timer

Containers occupy bag or backpack slots and define how much Tetris you can play before greed slows your extract. Playtest container tables include, among others:

ContainerApprox capacity ideaBeginner note
Satchel / KnapsackSmall grids (~6)Best for learning exits
Large KnapsackSlightly more (~8)Still disciplined
Common / Uncommon BackpackMid grids (~12–16)Standard supply runs
Hunter BackpackLarger, often with extra utility slots (lantern/rig style extras in catalogues)Great when you already leave on time
Large / Tall BackpackVery large totalsGreed engines — earn them

Exact cell layouts shift between builds; the philosophy does not. More capacity is not free power. Full tall packs punish retreats, hide your extract trigger, and turn Goblin swarms into stamina tragedies.

Knapsack versus larger bags

  • Knapsack / satchel: choose for scouting, first expeditions, and “reagents only” jobs. You will leave earlier because you physically cannot vacuum the map.
  • Common backpack: default once first expedition habits stick.
  • Hunter and larger packs: unlock psychologically after your party’s leave call is reliable (co-op tips). Some larger packs advertise lantern or rig extras — useful in dark catacombs, still deadly if overloaded.

Match the bag to the sentence goal you wrote before drop. If the goal is “eight Building Supplies and out,” a knapsack is a feature.

Stash versus carry — the only progression that matters

Permadeath deletes carried armor, bags, weapons, and loot. Camp stash does not. Loadout planning is risk budgeting:

Carry:

  • One coherent armor stack you can afford to lose
  • One bag sized to the job
  • Weapon kit from beginner builds or your role on the weapon tier list
  • Heal/utility you will actually use

Stash:

  • Spare helmet parts and fashion liveries
  • Upgrade metals and Building Supplies
  • Backup armor sets for the next character
  • Oversized backpacks you have not earned operationally

After every successful extract, deposit before you admire cosmetics. Use the loadout planner so “I might need this” items stay offline.

Example loadouts

Scout kit (solo or duo)

  • Light gambeson-level torso, simple coif
  • Knapsack
  • Sword-and-shield or light spear
  • Exit memorized on The Moor

Supply kit (party of 3–5)

  • Mid layered torso with repaired durability
  • Common or hunter backpack with a hard value cap spoken aloud
  • Mixed weapons per party planner
  • Deposit materials toward Workbench → Ironworks → Forge immediately on return

Darkness push kit (after basics)

  • Modular helmet with tested visor/nape setup
  • Backpack that can hold a lantern-style utility if available
  • Pierce-friendly weapon options for armored packs
  • Abort rules written beside the extraction checklist

Camp facilities and armor ambition

Weapon benches get the spotlight, but armor quality climbs the same spine: Workbench foundations, metal from Ironworks and Forge, serious work at Blacksmith, armor focus at Armoursmith. Do not plan steel sallet dreams while Building Supplies still languish outside the Workbench fund. See camp upgrades.

Closing discipline

Dress for the extract you planned, not the trailer you watched. Layer only what you can move in, bag only what you can abandon on command, and configure helmet parts in camp lighting before the ruins invent a lesson. When unsure, return to the builds hub, strip weight, and leave early — the stash is patient; the dark is not.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How is armor protection calculated?

Playtest-facing community data multiplies base defense by material hardness percentage and durability percentage. Worn or soft-grade pieces underperform their base numbers.

Should beginners use the largest backpack?

No. Start with a knapsack or small bag so you extract earlier. Larger backpacks are earned after your leave discipline is consistent.

What are helmet napes and visors?

Modular helmet parts. Napes extend rear/neck protection; visors cover the face and can change visibility. Assemble and test them at camp before hard routes.

What should I leave in the stash?

Spare armor sets, extra helmet components, upgrade materials, and any bag larger than tonight’s job requires. Only carry what you accept losing to permadeath.

When do I unlock better armor crafting?

Progress camp facilities from Workbench through Ironworks, Forge, and Blacksmith toward Armoursmith. Armor ambition should follow extract income, not wishlist screenshots.

How do armor loadouts relate to weapon builds?

Weapons win fights; armor and bags decide whether you survive long enough to extract. Pair this page with Beginner Builds and the Weapon Tier List for full kits.
