Expedition Into Darkness World Modifiers

Read the portent before you drop — the same ruin is not the same run.

World Modifiers Guide

World modifiers (and their enemy / loot portent cousins) rewrite the risk math of an expedition without renaming the map. In Expedition Into Darkness, you can learn The Moor, Catacomb Ruins, and Chapel Ruins by heart and still wipe because the night decided corpses should stand up again. This page catalogs playtest-facing portents — Blood Moon, Still Flesh, Shattered Graves, Silent Ossuaries, Black Tide, Black Drought, Waxing and Waning Moon, Vacant Chambers, Crawling Plenty, Gold Rush — and turns them into planning habits.

Use it with the map hub, the enemies index, and the printable extraction checklist so modifiers change your leave triggers, not your funeral plans.

Why modifiers matter more than vibes

Extraction looters punish static plans. A Building Supplies loop that is safe under Vacant Chambers can be a meat grinder under Crawling Plenty or Black Tide. A corpse you ignored under Still Flesh becomes a roaming problem under Blood Moon. Gold-friendly nights tempt heavier bags right when how to extract says you should already be walking.

Before queue, run a thirty-second ritual:

  1. Read the active portent names.
  2. Adjust enemy expectations (enemies, combat and controls).
  3. Adjust loot greed (loot and resources).
  4. Tighten or relax bag / time triggers — then lock them with the party (co-op tips).

If the modifier set is hostile and your kit is Workbench-tier, pick a gentler region or a shorter objective (getting started, beginner builds).

Enemy modifiers

Blood Moon

Fresh corpses twitch, rise, and roam. Cleared packs are not always cleared. Budget time and stamina for re-engages on the leave path. Do not celebrate mid-room while bodies cool — under Blood Moon, cooling is temporary. Raise leave triggers earlier; the walk home can sprout new problems.

Still Flesh

Fresh corpses remain unmoving. The counterweight to Blood Moon. You can trust a kill a little longer, which makes teaching loops and first extracts less chaotic. Still Flesh is not “easy mode” for living enemies — it only stops the dead from auditioning for round two.

Shattered Graves

Skeletal arms spring free from beneath the soil. Expect bone pressure from the ground itself, not only from hall patrols. On open Moor approaches and chapel yards, watch your feet as carefully as your sightlines. Pair with Bonekin habits from Catacomb Ruins thinking even when you are aboveground.

Silent Ossuaries

The long dead heed their rest. Skeletal pressure eases relative to louder bone nights. Use the breathing room to practice exit scouts and reagent goals — not to invent a full clear. Silent does not mean empty of Goblins or Fleshkin.

Black Tide

Blackblood clans emerge from the depths in great numbers. Goblin density spikes: archers, spearmen, grenadiers, ogres, and the rest of the clan menu. Prefer reach kits, pack peeks, and pre-cleared leave doors (builds, weapon crafting). Chokepoint extracts become grenade alleys — name a backup door on extraction points.

Black Drought

Most of the Blackblood clans return underground. Goblin pressure recedes. A good night for objective runs that usually die to clan packs — Red Thorn deliveries in Chapel Ruins, or calm supply loops on The Moor — provided other modifiers are not compensating with Bonekin or corpse rises.

Vacant Chambers

Fewer shapes wait in the dark; rooms feel hollow and silent. Lower encounter density. Ideal for teaching first expedition habits, stash-focused Building Supplies farms, and learning lever language on locations. Do not convert vacancy into a tourism mandate.

Crawling Plenty

More shapes scuttle from cracks and corridors. Higher density across the board. Shorten bag triggers, forbid optional boss skulls, and appoint an extract lead who ends debates (party planner). Crawling Plenty plus Black Tide is a “deliver one reagent and leave” night, not a museum night.

Fate and loot modifiers

Waxing Moon

Fate strengthens. Playtest text frames this as a favorable tilt — treat it as permission to attempt a slightly richer objective, not as immortality. Keep corruption discipline if anyone is running Toastmaster kits (forbidden power). Fate does not deposit for you.

Waning Moon

Fate recedes. Expect colder variance: missed rolls, nastier timing, less forgiveness. Tighten plans to a single objective and a known extract. Waning is when ego clears should stay in camp stories, not in live queues.

Gold Rush

Loot feels abundant — fortune smiles — but playtest notes warn value can rise while quantity falls. Practically: chests may feel “better” without filling every slot. That tempts players to open one more room for the missing stack. Counter with a written reagent list from crafting recipes and a hard leave. Gold Rush is an economy event, not a clear-everything holiday.

(Related inverse portents such as depleted-cache style nights may flip value versus quantity; always read the tooltip on the active modifier set rather than memorizing only the happy name.)

Planning matrix

Modifier climatePlan adjustment
Blood Moon + Crawling PlentyShortest loop; no optional skulls; leave early
Still Flesh + Vacant ChambersTeaching / supply night; still scout exits first
Black TideReach weapons, backup extract, goblin-aware kits
Black Drought + Gold RushObjective value run — crate, remains, or listed reagents — then extract
Shattered GravesWatch ground hazards; keep stamina for surprise bone pops
Waning MoonOne goal only; refuse victory laps

Always re-check region fit on the map hub after you read the portent row. Chapel calm plus Crawling Plenty is still a kill box. Moor sightlines plus Blood Moon still punish heavy bags.

Tie modifiers to camp goals

Modifiers should change which camp unlock you chase tonight, not whether you extract:

  • Need safe Building Supplies? Prefer Vacant Chambers / Black Drought windows on The Moor (camp upgrades, camp progression).
  • Need denser parts under hostile nights? Cut the shopping list harder and accept one reagent win (items hub).
  • Running magic? Hostile density plus corruption is a double bankruptcy risk — sheath the tome earlier (forbidden power).

After every successful leave, deposit before you re-queue into a worse portent. The camp stash is the only vault that ignores moon phases.

Common modifier mistakes

MistakeFix
Ignoring the portent UIRead it aloud in party chat before drop
Same bag trigger every nightScale triggers to density and corpse rules
Gold Rush tourismListed reagents only; extract on trigger
Treating Still Flesh as full safetyLiving packs still kill; exits still matter
Black Tide doorway fights with full bagsRotate to backup extract immediately

Keep release and playtest flux in view on the release timeline and wiki overview as Antediluvian Interactive approaches the planned Q4 2026 window (Steam 3126410). Modifier names and effects can deepen; the discipline will not: read the omen, rename the plan, and leave through a door you already trusted.

The ruins change their manners. Your extract does not get to change its mind.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What are world modifiers in Expedition Into Darkness?

Portents that alter enemy behavior, density, fate, or loot feel for a run. The map name stays the same, but Blood Moon corpses, Black Tide Goblins, or Gold Rush chests can rewrite your plan.

How should Blood Moon change my run?

Assume fresh corpses may rise and roam. Budget stamina for re-engages on the leave path, skip optional fights, and extract earlier than on Still Flesh nights.

What is the difference between Black Tide and Black Drought?

Black Tide floods the ruins with Blackblood clan Goblins. Black Drought sends most of those clans underground. Tide nights need reach kits and backup extracts; Drought nights favor focused objective loops.

Does Gold Rush mean I should clear more rooms?

No. Gold Rush can raise value while lowering quantity. Stick to a written reagent list and leave on your bag or time trigger instead of hunting every chest.

Where should I check modifiers against map plans?

Read the portent, then open the Map Hub and Extraction Checklist. Adjust leave triggers with your party before you drop into The Moor, Catacombs, or Chapel Ruins.
