Expedition Into Darkness Patch History
Observed pre-release change themes—not invented official patch IDs.
This page is a playtest-oriented change diary for Expedition Into Darkness. It is not a counterfeit Steam changelog with made-up version numbers. Until retail patches exist after the planned Q4 2026 launch, we group what players and creators repeatedly notice across alpha and public playtest windows. Always verify against official posts on Steam (app 3126410) and expedition-the-game.com.
When a theme affects how you run, update the Extraction Checklist, Loadout Planner, and Party Planner. Broader roadmap context—including the closed June 15 – July 7 2026 public playtest window—lives on the Release Timeline and the Updates Hub.

December 2025 public playtest window — theme notes (1.0.0–1.0.8 era)
The December 11 – January 5 public playtest window produced a cluster of community notes often discussed around early 1.0.0–1.0.8-style builds. Treat the version-ish labels as era markers, not as an official Steam changelog we copied. Themes from that window:
Timed / block changes (later iteration)
Players noticed defense feel continuing to move away from “hold forever” toward timed windows. Later builds in and after that era kept tuning the same idea—so re-test block timing every new public playtest window instead of trusting one clip.
Player impact: Drill short hallway fights; stop teaching permanent turtle block; watch stamina clarity feedback.
Crafting grip multipliers
Community talk called out grip / component multipliers affecting how assembled weapons feel in hand—reach, swing weight, or handling bias depending on parts. Exact numbers shift; the lesson is to re-assemble and feel kits in-build rather than copying a spreadsheet from one weekend.
Player impact: Rebuild via Weapon Crafting and the Loadout Planner when grip feel changes mid-window.
Exit bugs
Some sessions reported extraction / exit friction—hard-to-trigger doors, soft-locks on leave paths, or unclear extract interactables. Bug severity varied by build; log repros the same day.
Player impact: Always scout a backup exit; pair with How to Extract and Extraction Points; file feedback per the Playtest Guide.
Animation jank
Unfinished attack recovery, foot plant pops, and camera hitching showed up often. That is expected alpha/public-playtest polish debt—not a retail verdict.
Player impact: Record clips with timestamps; separate “jank that blocked extract” from cosmetic noise.
No controller in early builds
Early builds in this era were widely described as keyboard/mouse first, with controller support missing or incomplete. Do not assume gamepad parity until a later window confirms it.
Player impact: Confirm input support before inviting controller-only friends to a signup wave.
Performance
Hitches, load stutters, and co-op hitch clusters appeared in denser ruin tiles. Drop settings and recheck System Requirements before blaming balance.
Player impact: Note GPU/CPU/RAM with bug reports; keep a “low settings extract” profile ready.
| Dec–Jan theme | Do this next window |
|---|---|
| Timed blocks | Short drill fights; simplify swings |
| Grip multipliers | Re-craft and feel weapons in-build |
| Exit bugs | Dual-exit scout; log repros |
| Animation jank | Timestamped clips; prioritize extract blockers |
| No controller | Verify input before inviting pad players |
| Performance | Low-settings profile; attach specs |
Theme: Combat block timing (ongoing)
What players noticed: Earlier feel leaned toward holding block as a sustained defense. Newer alpha and public playtest sessions emphasize timed defensive windows and parry-style responses—more skill expression, less turtle indefinitely. The Dec–Jan window above is where many players first felt that shift stick.
Player impact:
- Stop teaching newcomers “hold block forever.”
- Drill timing in short hallway fights before deep pushes.
- Watch stamina: community feedback often asks for clearer stamina costs around defense.
- Ranged players still need a melee fallback when timing windows matter up close.
Wiki follow-up: Revise mid-run combat lines on the Extraction Checklist, retune weapon choices in the Loadout Planner, and refresh teaching tips in Getting Started / Guides.
Theme: New map spaces
What players noticed: Playtest waves introduce additional spaces beyond the first ruin flavor—community coverage has called out catacomb-style ruins, Chapel Ruins, and newer outdoor-adjacent areas such as moor-like tiles (including the June 2026 Moor-focused public playtest window). Layouts remain hostile: traps, unstable structures, gases, and hidden drops still apply.
Player impact:
- First night in a new window should be a scout objective, not a greed run.
- Re-learn exits; old muscle memory may soft-lock your extract path.
- Mark dead ends and blocked passages for the squad.
- Assume fog and verticality can hide flanks.
Wiki follow-up: Capture patterns under Map, keep Phase B navigation checks on the checklist, and avoid writing permanent “always spawn here” claims until retail stabilizes.
Theme: Skeleton enemies and PvE pack pressure
What players noticed: Skeleton-style enemies appear as part of newer PvE mixes in playtests, changing hallway tempo and punish tunnel vision while looting. Broader threat notes live on the Enemies hub.
Player impact:
- Clear audio cues before burying your face in a corpse pile.
- Frontline and scout must call pack spawns early (Party Planner).
- Support should track heals before engaging bone packs in gas or trap rooms.
- Solo runners should shrink bag caps when new dense packs show up.
Wiki follow-up: Enemy behavior notes belong on Enemies and near Guides combat pages; loadout bias may shift toward crowd control weapon families on Builds.
Theme: Co-op scale and extract stakes (stable pillars)
Not every observation is a change. These pillars stay consistent across messaging:
- Solo or up to four allies.
- Permanent character death; carried loot at risk; camp stash safe.
- Component weapon assembly and fashion customization.
- Base upgrades funded by successful extracts.
When something contradicts those pillars in a random clip, treat the clip as outdated or mislabelled until official channels agree.
Theme: Alpha / playtest jank (expected)
Playtest footage often shows unfinished animation, placeholder feel, UI gaps, or missing controller support in early builds. That is normal for pre-release windows—not a retail “broken launch” verdict. Log repro steps via habits in the Playtest Guide instead of rage-posting.

What we refuse to publish
- Fake “Patch 0.9.12” tables presented as official Steam notes
- Exact damage numbers scraped from one unverified datamine
- Claims that the full game has shipped
- Guaranteed launch day inside Q4 without studio confirmation
- Treating a closed public playtest window as permanent retail access
After retail ships
Once Antediluvian Interactive ships formal patches post-launch, this page will grow dated entries with real identifiers. Until then, use it as a theme radar: Dec–Jan crafting/combat notes, timed blocks, maps, skeletons, exits, and performance. Cross-check the Release Timeline, keep tools honest, and let Game Overview remain the pitch page while this stays the change page.
Disciplined wikis beat rumor wikis. If a friend forwards a screenshot with a version string, file it as a lead—then confirm. Your characters (and their bags) will thank you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why are there no official patch numbers here?
Pre-release builds change through public playtest windows. We document themes—including Dec 2025 1.0.0–1.0.8-era notes—until the studio publishes formal retail patch notes.
What stood out in the December 2025 playtest?
Community themes included timed/block changes, crafting grip multipliers, exit bugs, animation jank, limited or no controller in early builds, and performance hitches—framed as observations, not an official changelog.
Did blocking really change?
Community coverage describes a shift toward timed block windows instead of permanent hold blocking. Always re-test in the current public playtest window.
Are new maps permanent?
Playtest maps can rotate or change. Scout first each window and update Map notes instead of trusting old paths blindly.
Should I rebuild my kit after every playtest?
Rebuild when combat timing, grip feel, enemy mixes, or bag pressure feel different. Use the Loadout Planner checklist rather than copying outdated clips.
Where do I track the launch window?
See the Release Timeline page and the Steam store listing for the planned Q4 2026 window. The June 15 – July 7 2026 public playtest window is closed after that date.
