Locations Overview

Playtest expeditions in Expedition Into Darkness move through distinct ruin types: open moors, collapsed catacombs, quiet chapels, and mixed sites marked by loot, chests, levers, and boss skulls. This locations overview helps you choose a region that matches your kit, party size (1–5), and camp goals — then leave through a known extract instead of dying in a hallway you never planned to enter.

Deep pages exist for The Moor, Catacomb Ruins, Chapel Ruins, and general extraction points. Pair all of them with how to extract and the map hub. Active world modifiers can rewrite density and corpse rules on any of these regions — read the portent before you treat a familiar layout as safe.

How to evaluate a location

Before you drop, score the site on four axes:

  1. Sightlines — Can you see chases early (Moor) or only at arm’s length (catacombs)?
  2. Exit distance — How far is the best loot from a confirmed white-flag or lever exit?
  3. Enemy density — Fleshkin sprints, Goblin packs (grenadiers, ogres), or Bonekin tunnels?
  4. Reagent fit — Does this region efficiently fund your next camp upgrades spend?

If exit distance and enemy density both spike while your kit is still Workbench-tier, pick a gentler loop. Getting started and first expedition exist for that reason.

The Moor

Feel: Open, wet, readable. Flooded battlegrounds and basin pockets break the flatness, but you can usually spot trouble earlier than in tunnels.

Signature systems: Boat-wheel exits, lever sequences, and multiple approach lines toward extract.

Best for: Building Supplies farming, exit practice, teaching co-op leave calls.

Risk note: Open ground helps you see Fleshkin coming — it also gives them room to run you down if bags are heavy. Full route notes live on The Moor.

Catacomb Ruins

Feel: Tight, half-collapsed, vertical confusion. Sound travels strangely; calm is often a lie.

Signature systems: Long tunnels, skeleton / Bonekin patrols, loot clusters that sit far from safe doors.

Best for: Players who already extract on habit and need denser components for Forge-tier crafting recipes.

Risk note: Raise leave triggers earlier than on the Moor. Details and tunnel footage notes sit on Catacomb Ruins.

Chapel Ruins

Feel: Quiet stone, deceptive calm, candlelit false safety.

Signature systems: Playtest C loot markers, S levers, Red Thorn Supply Box, small anvil, otherworldly remains, boss skulls, and potion-plant spots for hemocanths / bitterblooms.

Best for: Focused loot runs when the party already has a named extract and a strict timer.

Risk note: Chapels invite victory laps. Treat them as waypoints. Confirm the extract approach on extraction points before you fill every slot with altar junk. Full marker legend, objective loops, and leave habits live on the dedicated Chapel Ruins page — open it when quiet sanctuaries become your main farm.

Modifier note: World modifiers such as Blood Moon, Black Tide, or Crawling Plenty hit chapel calm especially hard; tighten bag triggers when the portent row is hostile.

Mixed sites — chests, levers, boss skulls

Across playtest regions you will find repeating interaction language:

  • Chests — burst value; open them after you know the exit, not before.
  • Levers — open paths, drain water, or enable extracts; assign one player to track which are pulled.
  • Boss skulls / elite markers — optional power spikes that become mandatory wipe magnets when bags are already full.

A good party call: “skulls only if we are under the bag trigger.” Democracy after the marker is spotted usually ends in a wipe. Use co-op tips and the party planner to appoint an extract lead.

Route templates

Supply loop (early camp)

  1. Drop on The Moor with a light beginner build.
  2. Scout boat-wheel / lever exit first.
  3. Farm Building Supplies until the leave trigger.
  4. Extract, deposit, spend toward Workbench or Ironworks (camp progression).

Component loop (mid camp)

  1. Confirm Forge or Blacksmith reagent list from crafting recipes.
  2. Choose Catacomb or chapel clusters only if kits match the threat.
  3. Cap the run at the reagent count — not at “clear.”
  4. Rotate to backup extract if Goblins own the primary door.

Teaching loop (new co-op friends)

  1. Stay on The Moor.
  2. One extract lead, one revive/support role.
  3. Use the extraction checklist out loud.
  4. End after the first meaningful deposit so muscle memory forms.

Keep the wiki overview and release timeline nearby as Antediluvian Interactive approaches Q4 2026 (Steam 3126410). Region names and props will deepen; the discipline will not: name the door, take what the camp needs, and leave.

Locations are invitations. Extraction is the RSVP that matters.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Which location is best for new players?

The Moor. Readable sightlines and boat-wheel exits make it the safest place to learn loot-and-leave habits before Catacomb Ruins or dense chapel runs.

What do levers and boss skulls mean?

Levers often open paths, alter flooding, or enable extracts. Boss skulls mark elite or set-piece danger — treat them as optional unless your bag trigger still has room.

When should I try Catacomb Ruins?

After you can reliably extract on The Moor with pre-set leave triggers. Catacombs add tunnel pressure and longer walks to safety.

Are Chapel Ruins safer because they feel quiet?

No. Quiet chapels encourage overstay. Confirm your extract approach first, read any world modifiers, and leave when your bag, injury, or time trigger hits. See the Chapel Ruins guide for C/S markers, Red Thorn crates, and plant spots.

How should I pick a location for camp upgrades?

Match risk to your reagent goal. Use short Moor loops for Building Supplies early, then raise risk for denser Forge or Blacksmith parts only after extract discipline sticks.
